Chimbote Maternidad

August 1, 2019

Cesar Ruiz and Carolina Quintana (Chimbote, La Maternidad de Maria Hospital)

La Maternidad de Maria grew over fifty years from a simple maternity hospital in 1966 to a full-service hospital with nine departments and 24/7 services.

Cesar and Carolina documented the IT systems and then tackled several high-priority technology issues (including a physical therapy patient database and a redesigned pharmacy payment process) for La Maternidad de Maria, a hospital which has for over fifty years served the Chimbote Peru destitute poor in need of medical assistance.

La Maternidad de Maria grew over fifty years from a simple maternity hospital in 1966 to a full-service hospital with nine departments and 24/7 services.  While the hospital managed to sustain that growth with limited technical capacity, the information systems infrastructure and processes have not kept pace.  The CMU students started by documenting the hospitals information technology infrastructure and processes and then proceeded to tackle the most pressing issues.  They created a new physical therapy patient database, key management reports for hospital leadership, a redesigned payment process for the pharmacy department and a new patient profile that combines hospital patient records with lab results.  Finally, they provided a roadmap of recommendations to continue to improve the information technology platform for the hospital.
